Abstract | This article presents an interview with Gary Olson on the changing contexts of the humanities in this modern world. He emphasizes that the humanities are absolutely essential when it comes to the very real-world problems. He explains that what he is saying not just applies to terrorism and economic crisis; the humanities equip everyone to deal intelligently with the world in general, and especially with the kinds of pain and conflict that the world always seems to present to everyone. He shares his assessment of the present state of the humanities, particularly in terms of its position within U.S. colleges and universities. He encourages everyone to become better advocates within one's own institution. He discusses his idea on embracing public relations as a way to sell humanistic work to the outside world.
