Abstract | It is known from history that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people have always existed in society. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexed, and queer/questioning (LGBTIQ) individuals, collectively known as sexual minorities, represent approximately 10% of the population. As many as nine students in every classroom of 30 are in some measure affected by sexual minority issues. "Yet even with this substantial number, the code of silence in the nation's school systems concerning homosexuality remains" (Fontaine, 1997, pp. 101-102). This silence and/or omission is characteristic of heterosexism, which is pervasive throughout the United States. The purpose of this article is to outline how heterosexist bias permeates the U.S. system of education and to present reasoning as to why LGBTIQ content should be included in the nation's public schools. To adapt a phrase coined by Bruce Bawer (1993) in his book about the incorporation of LGB persons in the society at-large, there is a place at the chalkboard for students of all sexual orientations, including LGBTIQ individuals. In conclusion, the authors assert that insensitive educational policies serve only to disempower LGBTIQ students. The authors provide key points to remember to promote equal access of LGBTIQ students in extra-curricular activities and the curriculum. (ERIC). |
