| Abstract | This article is a case study of the expansion of schooling [i.e. the extension of schooling to all segments of a society] in Argentina between 1960 and 1991, focusing on the evolution of regional inequalities in educational opportunities and their relationship with regional economic differences. ... The Argentinian state developed a system based on compulsory primary school attendance and the free provision of education through the tertiary levels. By 1960, 83 percent of the school- age population (6-12) was attending primary school, a total that reached 96 percents by 1991. The secondary enrollment rate increased ... from 25 to 59 percent, during the same period. For higher education, enrollment jumped from 4 to 20 percent ... This rapid expansion was neither constant nor uniform across provinces. Two central questions motivate this research. First, how did regional differences in enrollment evolve between 1960 and 1991 and how was this evolution affected by provincial economic and social conditions? Second, how do the regional imbalances in enrollment compare to the evolution of regional economic imbalances? (DIPF/orig.) |
