| Abstract | This introductory article to the special number of "Comparative Education" has two functions. The first is to sketch the historical and socio-cultural contexts for educational development in the South Pacific. The second is to help identify educational issues that are likely to command priority attention from Pacific educators, planners and policy makers in the 1990s. The sections of this paper 1) document the principal characteristics of education in island societies before Europeans and Americans arrived, 2) trace patterns of Western exploration and colonialisation, 3) explore the origins of formal Western education in the region, 4) identify selected educational issues of critical concern within the Contemporary Pacific.
