| Abstract | We compare the Cook Islands, one of the smallest Pacific island countries, with the Solomon Islands, which is one of the largest (second in size and in polulation). Differences between the levels and kinds of education in the two countries, it is argued, are due to size, constitutional relationships, average per capita income levels, the extent of foreign investment, the extent of urbanization, and the degree of subordination to an externally imposed and supported Pacific regional ideology of education. Our main focus is on post-school education. (This is) the area of strongest contrast between the two cases. Post-school for the Cook Islands means post-secondary, because secondary education is compulsory. For the Solomon Islands it is largely post-primary, for there is room in the high schools only for one quarter of those who complete primary school. (DIPF/Text uebernommen/bi.) |
