Abstract | This lesson plan is based on "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. Characters in "The Hunger Games" form alliances both inside and outside the arena. Katniss and Gale form alliances within District 12. Katniss, Peeta, and the other tributes form alliances for a variety of reasons during the Games. An alliance means that "someone's got your back" and you will stand up for them. Why would Katniss (and the others) want to form alliances? In this lesson students will: (1) compare the types of alliances through notes and then discuss them based on "The Hunger Games"; (2) analyze alliances in "The Hunger Games" by determining the best type(s) of alliance for each grouping of characters; and (3) define alliances and give the pros and cons for joining alliances through discussion and completion of a chart.
