| Abstract | There is a clear analogy between the improvisational actor and the teacher. Teaching in the college classroom has that same mix of premeditation and improvisation that effectively communicates with the audience. The theater metaphor is particularly useful for a teacher's development of presentational communication skills. A teacher's "performance" can be enhanced using the same preparation, rehearsal, and audience analysis techniques utilized by actors. Of particular importance are overcoming performance anxiety, effectively combining preparation and improvisation, supporting verbal messages with appropriate nonverbal behavior, and learning to play multiple roles to communicate effectively with a variety of student "audiences."
