Abstract | Discusses a broad framework of the changing global economy, which is likely to influence the future of English teaching. Considers three consequences of "informationalism," a new stage of global capitalism: a shift in authority over English to a growing number of speakers of nonnative and nonstandard varieties; a growing need to use English to communicate complex ideas, and a change in conceptions of literacy to include electronic forms.
