AbstractIn this issue, editor Amara G. Hark-Weber speaks with two practicing artists who teach in very different programs and settings at college level. The first works with individuals who want to make a career out of their craft. Terry Gess is a potter in Western North Carolina who maintains his own practice and studio while also teaching at Haywood Community College in Western North Carolina. Cathie Ruggie Saunders has been teaching letterpress for many years at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, fostering a new community of printers each semester in her classes. While Terry teaches in a rural community with open enrollment and Cathie in a competitive program in the heart of one of the nation's largest cities, their thoughts regarding teaching, time, and community run parallel. They each discuss how their own passion and experience lead them in the classroom, pushing them to become more than instructors teaching technical skills, but also individuals who lead by example with their own experience forming the backbone of their instruction.
