| Abstract | The equality of access to schooling promoted in the primary sector in Brazil and in the UK by the comprehensivation of secondary schools has brought into the reality of schools a broader social and cultural mix which hardly existed before. The analyis of the impact of teachers' perceptions and expectations concerning those groups who have been persistently disadvantaged by the educational systems in Brazil and the UK seems to indicate the urgent need to consider alternatives to provide teacher education concerned with a perspective of change, so that the aim of enhancing the educational profile of the populations in question can be more effectively achieved. Whilst the first section will address studies on perceptions and expectations and their consequences in the perpetuation of inequality in Brazil and the UK, the subsequent section will discuss the extent to which intercultural perspective in teacher education can help construct a possible path to overcome the problem within the limited scope of the educational framework.
