AbstractVery few elementary public school teachers in the United States expose their students to religion and spirituality in an in-depth way. Even when they have the necessary knowledge base, they shy away from so dangerous an enterprise. They might fear provoking a challenge from parents who are irreligious and are shocked to find religion being discussed in a public school setting. Or they might fear fundamentalist groups who are shocked to find the wrong religion being discussed. Or they might be unsure about what the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution permits regarding the separation of church and state. In this article, the authors reflect on how some public school teachers expose their students to religion and spirituality in a public school classroom. This article describes a two-week thematic unit that one of the authors (Lewy) designed. The unit was centred around the concept of "Honouring" and the Latin American holiday El Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, during the author's student-teaching semester in a fourth-to-fifth-grade classroom.
