Abstract | In 2010, Madison Area Technical College (Madison College), a comprehensive community college in Madison, Wisconsin, was selected by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs (ECA) to head a consortium project to expand the capacity of community colleges to offer study-abroad programs. The project focuses on strengthening the capacity of colleges to offer study abroad and on developing service learning programs related to renewable energy, engineering, and sustainable development in Central America and the Caribbean. Madison College has used this award to create the Community College Sustainable Development Network (CCSDN), a consortium of 24 community colleges working collaboratively to develop new faculty-led study-abroad opportunities, and an experiential education training program that shares best practices in new study-abroad program development. This chapter uses examples from the Madison College experience and lessons from the CCSDN model to illustrate best practices in community college internationalization. (ERIC). |
