Abstract | To better understand the influence of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) competencies on practice since their formation, six community college chief executive officers (five presidents and one chancellor) were asked to reflect upon the enduring relevance of the competencies. They were also asked specifically how they acquired and developed these competencies, the ways they integrate them into their professional practice, and what components might be missing from the framework. This chapter begins with an introduction of the study participants, including their path to the presidency, and an overview of how they developed the identified leadership competencies. Discussion then shifts to the competencies used in practice by describing how these presidents integrate the AACC leadership competencies into hiring, evaluating, and preparing future leaders. Finally, the presidents were asked to reflect upon the competencies specifically and to identify any areas that may be missing from the original framework. The chapter concludes with recommendations to improve the development process for future leaders. (Contains 1 table.) (ERIC). |
