| Abstract | This article features four colleges and how they take on veterans' issues in research and real life. These colleges are (1) Syracuse University; (2) Purdue University; (3) University of Southern California; and (4) University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Last year Syracuse established the Institute for Veterans and Military Families to focus on social, economic, and educational policy issues affecting that population. Believed to be the first academic institute dedicated to veterans, the institute conducts, finances, and disseminates related academic research. It also collaborates with the private sector to support veterans' employment. Purdue's Military Family Research Institute, founded in 2000, serves as a bridge between the military community and the general public. Its goal is to strengthen support for veterans and military families through academic research, community work, and advocacy on policy matters. It also guides civilians who want to aid veterans and military families but are unsure how to get started. The University of Southern California's School of Social Work is affiliated with the Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans and Military Families. The center grew out of administrators' desire to help social-service providers in the state who were seeing an uptick in veterans but were unfamiliar with military culture and unprepared, in a clinical sense, to deal with them. Through partnerships with public agencies and veterans' groups, the center is trying to improve the social services that veterans receive in California. It also conducts research on the military population and recently began serving as statewide coordinator for the Los Angeles Veterans Collaborative. Odum Institute for Research in Social Science at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the home of the Citizen Soldier Support Program, a federally financed program, started in 2005, that is designed to connect service members and veterans--particularly those in rural areas, as well as in the Reserve and National Guard--with existing social services. Using in-person and online trainings, the program has instructed more than 4,000 service providers in all 50 states on how to work with service members, veterans, and their families. (ERIC). |
