AbstractPlace plays an indelible role in the way people perceive and come to understand the world around them. Place influences their interactions by shaping the genres, texts, and languages they use as writers and readers. Therefore, writing that's tied to place and community encourages students to seriously consider the effects of these interactions, their intended audiences, and underlying purposes. It also helps them think independently about their involvement in these communities. The author suggests that English teachers have to help students identify those places and communities that are personally significant, and engage them in meaningful work that deals with real issues and real audiences. The author asks students to compose public service announcements that hit them where they live. Writing about the places that matter in their lives, the students explore personally relevant and real-world issues affecting their communities by creating print and multimodal texts.
