Abstract | The clear message in the common core literacy standards is that students need to do less narrative reading and more informational reading. But narrative, the author contends, is the deep structure of all good writing. Teachers need to show students how narrative works in their reading, be it fiction or nonfiction. Students should understand that a good author typically starts off a piece of writing with some kind of "trouble." As students start to read, they need to clarify who the main actors are; identify how the author has constructed his or her work; and attend to the nature of the teller, that person who is guiding them through facts, theories, or perspectives.
