Abstract | The experience of technology change pervades people's lives. Sometimes it comes in the guise of a new smart phone, e-reader, or patch for a leaky artery. Other times, it appears as a new way to track packages, connect with others through social networks, or find one's way around an unfamiliar place. Or it reveals itself as a new surgical technique, way of organizing a factory or workplace, or diagnostic procedure. In short, technology change can range from devices that increase productivity or enhance communications, entertainment, or physical well-being to systems that bring people and information together to solve everyday problems, or tools that help people manipulate materials, structure work, or organize information and concepts. In each case, technology change alters the way people apply knowledge and skills to control and adapt to their environment. Just as people's lives are not immune to the impacts of technology change, neither are workplace or education settings. This article explores how technology change is reshaping workplaces, the educational needs of the labor force, and the two-year colleges that provide career and technical education in the United States.
