Abstract | With the focus placed on accountability as a result of No Child Left Behind (2001), assessment has come to the forefront of education. However the situation has arisen where teachers teach to the test instead of the test measuring what the students have learned. Learning is a permanent change in a person's skill, knowledge, or behavior due to practice or experience. In order to assess learning, the author suggests that one must observe behavior over time; rubrics are a record of specific skills or behaviors that have occurred. In this article, the author talks about rubrics as a good solution for assessment. Rubrics can assist in judging the quality of the skill performed or the outcome in order to give direct feedback to the student. Students are often uncertain of the expectations of each teacher or how to complete each assignment that is required. When presented with a rubric, students are certain of the expectations because the requirements are in writing. (Contains 4 figures.) (ERIC). |
