AbstractThe Region IV Education Service Center (ESC) in Texas has been delivering G/T professional development for almost two decades, and it has a great plan. Texas is one of 27 states that mandate full or partial gifted education. Accountability is provided through standards for professional development, which are outlined in the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students. The plan states that Texas teachers who are going to provide services to identified gifted students in the four core areas of instruction (math, science, social studies, and language arts) are required to take 30 hours of gifted and talented professional development. Teachers who provide instruction and services that are part of the program for gifted students must earn a minimum of six hours of professional development annually in gifted education. In addition, the plan indicates that the 30 hours must include nature and needs of gifted students, assessment of gifted students, and curriculum and instruction of gifted students. Having a plan in place does help educational specialists organize topics to present to teachers; however, it still is a challenge to present this information to a "captive audience" in an effective manner. The author suggests that the information must be both valid and presented in a format that models good teaching strategies. (ERIC).
