AbstractThis article features the Connie Belin & Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development, and describes how the University of Iowa College of Education offers teacher education through the Belin-Blank dynamic model of professional development. As a part of the University of Iowa College of Education, the Belin-Blank Center sponsors graduate-level workshops and courses throughout the academic year and provides a wide array of summer programs that allow teachers to strengthen their understanding of the needs of gifted children--and the ways to meet those needs. The Belin-Blank Center is a "full-service" center in the field of gifted education, offering assessment and counseling services for students and their families, talent search opportunities for high-ability students, and exciting academic-year and summer programs for students eager to experience authentic challenges in multiple areas of talent development. In addition to the academic-year courses and summer workshops in gifted education, the Belin-Blank Center developed the Dynamic Model of Professional Development as a unique program that models key components of effective gifted education. The Dynamic Model facilitates teacher exploration of personal attitudes toward high-ability students and gifted programs by allowing teachers to enlarge their understandings of the nature and needs of gifted students.
