AbstractSince the earliest times, humans have made objects--oil lamps carved out of stone to light their way, baskets and pots to hold grain and water, blankets and clothing to protect them from the elements. At some point, their need for the functional was enhanced by their desire for the beautiful. They began to decorate their lamps, pots, baskets, blankets, and clothing. One of the most important reasons art teachers teach art is so that now and throughout their lives, students will cherish the long history of creating beautiful things. The PBS series, "Craft in America," provides glimpses into the working lives of contemporary craft artists. Organized around themes such as "Memory," "Messages," "Family," and "Threads," each one-hour segment features at least four artists shown in their studios and homes. The Craft in America website has a wealth of information and suggested strategies for teaching. Lessons incorporate video segments and offer suggestions for engaging students in response and art-making experiences. The series and the website are wonderful resources for teachers who wish to help students appreciate the long history of humans making beautiful objects. (Contains 1 online resource.) (ERIC).
