Abstract | In this article, the author explains why students with autism must be treated as individuals. As she has completed the requirements to become a licensed principal, she has also studied how her daughters fare in school, leading her to suggest the following advice for principals: (1) know that autism is a spectrum disorder; (2) have all staff members trained in autism; (3) involve everyone; (4) implement an abilities-awareness program in your school; (5) be careful not to blame the parents; (6) do not assume that educators are not working with you; (7) use data to your advantage; (8) prepare the children for changes in their routine or staffing changes; (9) use children's strengths to help remediate their areas of weakness; and (10) never underestimate what children can do. School leaders have the potential to open doors for students on the autism spectrum by providing them with a setting that will enable them to reach their full potential. (ERIC). |
