Abstract | Chance, a word used in various languages to refer to "possibility" or "opportunity", is the name that was intentionally chosen for a project which has been running for 11 years in Naples and is aimed at young people aged 15-17 who have dropped out of compulsory schooling. Despite being based on a school structure and located within traditional school premises, this project is characterised by several highly original aspects. One of these regards the presence of child psychologists, psychotherapists with expert knowledge of child and adolescent psychotherapy, psychoanalysts and psychologists involved at various levels in supporting the work of the teachers. In this article, the authors present a brief overview of the project and the psychological techniques employed. They give a description of the characteristics of the young people, their families and their social and cultural background. These characteristics are certainly context-specific but they are also similar, to a certain extent, to those of young people from other countries living in similarly deprived circumstances and steeped in a world of violence. Lastly, the authors present the stories of two girls and the personalised courses developed in both school and afterschool contexts in order to support their difficult and strenuous search for an identity that differed from the models provided by their families and the local community.
