Abstract | There are many challenges that lie ahead for families of children with special needs. It is indeed a time for conquering the unknown and diligently exploring the options in an effort to locate, understand, and ultimately embrace the as yet undiscovered beauties of the new setting. This paper will consider some of the issues relevant for parents, teachers, and counsellors in dealing with those with special needs. More specific attention will be directed toward those individuals who experience a hearing impairment. The author also presents a review of "Supporting Deaf Children and Young People: Strategies for Intervention, Inclusion and Improvement" (E. Brinkley, Ed., 2011, London, Continuum International). This book is written from a position of experience and covers a range of topics including language, communication, teaching strategies, and emotional and psychological issues. It offers points to consider at the end of each chapter, together with some tips for teachers regarding some of the key difficulties that can arise when teaching the deaf. (ERIC). |
