Abstract | In this essay, the authors talk about higher degree supervision as a human relationship, and shares how to supervise a PhD. There's a tendency now to talk about supervision as if it's a technical process one needs to learn the rules of. This paper urges educators to think about this as a human educational relationship, which has all the ups and downs that any human relationship does. The paper aims to get people to think in a rounded way about supervision, not just a technical matter. It also aims to get graduate students to be thinking about the nature of this relationship, to see the supervisor not just as the authority figure or the bureaucratic figure, but as someone who is engaged in an educational interchange.
