Abstract | When trying to reach their sustainability goals, schools and school districts often run into obstacles, including financing, training, and implementation tools. Last fall, the U.S. Green Building Council-Georgia (USGBC-Georgia) launched its High Performance, Healthy Schools (HPHS) Program to help Georgia schools overcome those obstacles. By supporting the greening of all schools--new and existing--USGBC-Georgia can tremendously affect student health, test scores, teacher retention, school operational costs, and the environment. The HPHS Program focuses on two elements: (1) building renewal and facility retrofits; and (2) occupant conservation programs. The author looks at each of these elements and their benefits for a district and its students. (ERIC). |
