AbstractIn this paper the author attempts to describe the actual linguistic problems of the retardates, compare their language with that of normal children and thereby tries to illustrate that although the language of retardates delay, they acquire language in the same sequence, as compared with the normal children. Three moderately retarded children with Intelligence Quotient (IQ) 36-40 and chronological age 12 were selected for the study. Data were collected by depth interview in an informal way and by observation method. Information on current level functioning of the child were collected in this way. The overall picture of language development in children with retardation provides strong evidence for the various delays in comparison to normal children. It is seen that retarded children follow same set of universal principles in acquisition of word meaning especially the mild and moderate retarded children, and is not true with the case of severely and profoundly retarded children. Similarly, there are similarities in the kinds of phonological errors made by these children with that of normal children having the universal aspects of speech articulation process. (ERIC).
