AbstractParticipating in the Disney Planet Challenge (DPC) program allowed this author's 22 fourth-grade students an opportunity to be involved in a real-world problem: how to protect a threatened species and become its advocate. Using many different technology tools, the students informed their community about a threatened species--the Blanding's turtle--its habitats, and the threats that the turtles face. Students employed technology to collect data, analyze and draw conclusions, and create presentations so that the community members became more aware of the turtles. This article describes the seven different technology tools that these fourth graders learned to use in their DPC project, "Operation Blanding's Nation: Awareness, Appreciation, and Advocacy." By using technology in this very real environmental problem, the turtles are now better known in their community--and the students are more fluent using tools that will be required for them to be successful in this digital world.
