AbstractThe author is pleased to see that the future directions of the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders (CCBD) are being addressed. The celebration of the 50th birthday of the inception of CCBD has set the occasion to carefully examine the status quo of the organization and to set future directions, as appropriate. The authors of "New Direction for CCBD?": Alec Peck, Susan Albrecht, Cheryl George, Sarup Mathur, Mike Paget, Joseph Ryan, Richard White, and Diana Baker, are to be acknowledged and thanked for their research, analyses, and thoughtful and measured conclusions. Their paper is important and timely. The authors of "New Directions for CCBD?" conducted three related survey studies to determine the extent to which CCBD serves its current members. Participants in the study surveyed were representatives of primary, secondary, and higher education (teachers, administrators, researchers, and college professors). Specific questions were asked of the participants based on the extent to which CCBD met their needs and expectations for delivering services to students with emotional and behavioral problems in schools. In this sense, the study is based on the perceptions of what these professionals see as their needs and the needs of the organization. Colvin's response to this position paper is predicated on the assumption that decisions need to be made regarding future directions of CCBD. He addresses the paper in terms of its utility for helping to make these decisions and for defining the course of CCBD in the years ahead. To this end Colvin considers three areas: (1) conclusions presented from the current research paper; (2) a need for hard data--student data; and (3) a need to systematically operationalize four critical areas--addressing student learning, expanding the application of functional behavioral assessment, interrupting the incarceration track, and providing ongoing advocacy.
