Abstract"If we are really serious about equity in education, what will it take to achieve improvements?" This question became the focus of a project between the Canadian Education Association and the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education to foster dialogue about equity and educational improvement. Although the two countries have different social and educational contexts, both are looking for ways to lessen the impact of socio-economic status on educational performance. Achieving equitable outcomes for children and youth from certain racial and lower socio-economic groups is a complex and intractable problem. Existing inequalities have widespread negative consequences for collective society as well as for individuals and attempts to solve the problem by imposing mandatory accountability measures have failed. But poverty need not be destiny. Evidence is mounting about what is required to close the equity gap. We need to build professional capacity, improve educational outcomes for all, and put in place targeted strategies and innovations for lower performing and disadvantaged groups.
