AbstractThe diverse higher education members of the Hartford Consortium for Higher Education independently partner with the Hartford Public Schools and deliver more than forty programs in the schools. These programs are varied and include such areas as college access, professional development for teachers, technology initiatives, tutoring, and science enrichment. The consortium as a collaborative enterprise, however, focuses its work with the Hartford schools exclusively on college access. The Hartford Consortium for Higher Education has emphasized the issue of college access since 1986 and maintains the importance of also addressing issues that affect the public school system in Hartford, Connecticut. The consortium has an ambitious agenda for the future that includes coordinating college access services with the changing academic programs in Hartford schools and the growing number of youth service providers in the city. As part of this effort, the consortium will work with the public schools and other stakeholders to weave together a seamless array of college access services from elementary to high school. The goals are to build high expectations of academic achievement and college attendance at all levels within the community and to provide more support and information about college to every child.
