Abstract | The author's art program includes students from kindergarten through eighth grade. In pondering the "nearly impossible," he wondered how the entire student population could work together on one art project that could be exhibited at the same time. He wanted each of his 700 students to create an original artwork that would display individual and personal artistic style, and use a subject matter appropriate for all grade levels. His solution? Self-portraits, in which each student in the school would create a small self-portrait on 4" x 5" white construction paper. Students learned the basics of how to create a simple portrait, with original twists here and there, and the the project demonstrated that artists working together successfully can lead to a very rich and positive art experience.
