AbstractLibrary media specialists understand better than anyone else that students must learn to engage with a wide variety of information types and formats to be efficient and effective learners in the 21st century. The I-LEARN Model--Identify, Locate, Evaluate, Apply, Reflect, kNow--both describes the process of learning with information and provides a teaching tool linked directly to information-age learning. The model builds on the well-known information literacy paradigm--accessing, evaluating, and using information--to "operationalize" an inquiry approach to learning. The I-LEARN model includes six major stages, which describe the overall process of learning with information, and eighteen elements, three related to each stage, which flesh out the major stages with suggested ways to implement them. By operationalizing learning with information in only six stages and a few elements within each, the model is a tool that library media specialists and teachers can use to break the task of learning with information into manageable chunks that fit into a logical overall structure.
