Abstract | The present study replicated research conducted decades earlier (Goldman & Goldman, 1982a; Koch, 197480) on what children in the United States know about conception and birth compared to those in other countries. Specifically, response drawings by 48 six-year-old boys and girls from England, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States were compared. Children were asked to draw pictures in response to two questions: "Where do babies come from?" and "How are babies made?" Descriptive analysis revealed that most six-year-olds, no matter what country they were from, tended to show a limited understanding of conception and birth. However, there were several children who demonstrated a much greater comprehension. In most cases, these children were from Sweden and the Netherlands, two countries known for their progressive sexuality education programs. The children sampled from the United States still lagged behind their peers in other countries. The results of this exploratory study suggest that differences may exist between countries, and a larger more systematic study needs to be done to determine if such differences do exist.
