Abstract	The place of popular and multifunctional media in the musical life of young people has been addressed in several studies. Music can aid in understanding youth cultures through the identification of musical preferences: inform about new lifestyles, fashions, ways of acting, work as motivation for personal dreams and aspirations, and build identities. Beyond all of those issues, increasingly sophisticated devices offer the possibility to be "with" music everywhere, and at all times. Media, considered here as a means of communication, are present to a considerable extent in the lives of children and teenagers. At the heart of this article, then, is the notion that music education with and in media must not be ignored or neglected by educators' profession. The present examination builds upon research on technology-mediated musical education, exploring and conceptualizing how youth experience music through different types of media. The framework for the article comes out of studies in and outside school environs, focusing upon diverse practices such as: musical conceptions and practices of homeless youth, the construction of gender identity among primary school students, singing mediated by technologies and their use by youth from different socio-economic levels, musical educational practices of rappers and DJs, coeducational music between youth and adults, musical socialization of working class youth, and music learning via portable technologies.
