Abstract | This article first presents the political, personal, and epidemiological context of Hortensia Amaro's 1988 publication in "Psychology of Women Quarterly" ("PWQ"), "Considerations for Prevention of HIV Infection Among Hispanic Women" (Amaro, 1988). Second, it provides a brief summary of progress in HIV prevention with Latinas. The third section comprises reflections from three feminist researchers whose work was informed by the 1988 article and by subsequent work Amaro conducted and published, often in collaboration with them, on the role of gender in HIV and related public health issues. Their reflections are offered as examples of the key role of mentoring and training opportunities for junior researchers, one of the recommendations in the 1988 publication. Finally, this article offers conclusions about progress to date and recommendations regarding future research and public health programs. (ERIC). |
