Abstract | In this commentary, the author reflects on her article entitled, "Alcohol and Dating Risk Factors for Sexual Assault Among College Women" (Abbey, Ross, McDuffie, & McAuslan, 1996) and her work in personal, intellectual, and disciplinary context. The original article can be found at http://pwq.sagepub.com/content/20/1/147. This personal reflection had been initiated by her grandmother's photos, and over the past few months she has spent a great deal of time pondering the circuitous route through which she became a feminist scholar passionate about understanding and finding ways to eliminate violence against women. The 1996 article represented a turning point in her career. Her dissertation involved lengthy interviews with rape victims who sought emergency room services. In the process, the author learned how naive she was about many aspects of field research, and more importantly, she realized that survivors' cognitions were much more "sophisticated and adaptive" than researchers, clinicians, and lay advocates recognized.
