Abstract | There are numerous factors and concerns to take into consideration when implementing new technology into a counseling center's practice. These factors--informed consent, confidentiality, record-keeping, licensure, technical issues, eligibility, emergencies, and staff perceptions--are legitimate and must be addressed and resolved before videocounseling can be successfully integrated into university counseling center (UCC) operations. However, it must also be acknowledged that new technologies such as videocounseling are uniquely suited to address the limitations of in-person counseling services at institutions where a significant number of students are unable to access services. Study abroad programs, internships, distance learning opportunities, and far-flung satellite campuses will continue to challenge UCCs to think creatively about how to provide services to students who are not able to walk into their offices. The use of technologies such as videocounseling, if thoroughly researched and thoughtfully implemented, could prove to be an invaluable resource for colleges and universities in the future. (ERIC). |
