Abstract | Colleges, schools, and faculties at large universities form strong academic bonds with students. So is it any wonder they want a say in keeping these students engaged as alumni? To provide that input, many larger institutions are decentralizing their alumni operations, meaning that colleges, schools, and faculties have their own alumni staff members who work separately from a central alumni office. Decentralized alumni relations can have distinct benefits when the conditions are right. But is it the right decision for every large institution? A lot depends on where an institution is in its alumni relations life cycle. If a university does not have a strong central effort, school-based alumni operations can lose their connection to the larger whole. This can create confusion among alumni and ultimately discount the university's brand. And even if the central alumni operation is strong, coordinating logistics--from choosing weekends for reunion to streamlining communications--can be challenging. Decentralized alumni relations, like most alumni relations endeavors, requires maintaining a strong overall vision; balancing the needs of the whole with those of the parts; and keeping open lines of communication between deans, school-based offices, and the central alumni organization.
