AbstractIn this chapter, the author outlines the growth of international branch campuses (IBCs) over the past fifty years and discusses some of the major management and leadership challenges associated with creating and sustaining IBCs. Part one of the chapter provides a discussion of the global expansion of IBCs. The second part focuses on the motivations for opening a branch campus and the roles they play in the local environment, with parts three and four explaining some of the conditions of the local environment and the cultural impact. The author then describes the types of boundaries with which IBC leaders may have to deal and concludes with an overview of issues for future investigation. In addition to a review of secondary sources, the author primarily draws upon data gathered by the Cross-Border Education Research Team (C-BERT) at the University at Albany, State University of New York. C-BERT has conducted extensive research into the development of IBCs, including a compilation of bibliographic materials, interviews with dozens of campus leaders, and site visits to more than fifty IBCs in ten countries. The information provided in this chapter is drawn directly from this extensive data set. (Contains 1 table and 2 notes.) (ERIC).
