| Abstract | The use of data is critical to the teaching of probability and statistics. At the very least, data should be provided within a meaningful context rather than presented as a generic, meaningless collection of numbers. Students often respond better, however, when working with data that they have gathered themselves. Having students collect data is a potent way to teach both theoretical subtleties as well as logistical complexities that often arise in sampling design. This article is intended to provide data-gathering ideas geared toward students who might be described as video gamers, a rapidly growing and often overlooked demographic. It illustrates how virtual worlds, such as the one inhabited by the players of World of Warcraft, can serve as sampling grounds for students who are video gamers. (ERIC). |
