Abstract | Tiny prisms in reflective road signs and safety vests have interesting geometrical properties that can be discussed at any level of high school mathematics. At the beginning of the school year, the author teaches a unit on these reflective materials in her precalculus class so that students can review and strengthen their geometry and trigonometry skills using a practical application. The unit is challenging and allows students to collaborate on problem solving and to investigate the mathematics used by optical engineers. This article summarizes five lessons, taught one day at a time, and demonstrates the progression of students' knowledge about the mathematics and the physics that underlie the design of reflective materials.
