| Abstract | Personality disorders (PDs) arise from core psychopathology of interpersonal relationships and understanding of self and others. The distorted representations of self and others, as well as unhealthy relationships that characterize persons with various PDs, indicate the possibility that persons with PDs have insecure attachment. Insecure attachments in infancy and childhood may serve as markers of risk for development of PD. This group of children and adolescents may require special attention and intervention. There is obviously a need for prospective studies regarding the role of attachment style in personality evolution, especially in disorders other than borderline personality disorder. Evidence of differential response to treatment by patients with various attachment styles, emphasizes the need for research to provide guidance on engaging patients in the therapeutic process.
