| Abstract | In this article, the author describes an art lesson that was inspired by Andy Warhol's mass-produced portraits. Warhol began his career as a graphic artist and illustrator. His artwork was a response to the redundancy of the advertising images put in front of the American public. Celebrities and famous people in magazines and newspapers were seen so often that they were simply black-and-white shapes, with the humanity removed, as portrayed by Warhol. As a class, the author and her students talked about images they see today over and again in the media, and how they reflect upon the person in that image. They worked in Warhol's style of reducing the facial image down to black and white, yet they brought back the "self" by choosing sentences they felt helped define the true person behind the image.
