AbstractTaking children out of the classroom to learn in a totally different environment can be very rewarding for both the children and the teacher. Part of the excitement is the unfamiliarity of the place, which has its positive sides but can lead to a lack of focus. As part of the Darwin 200 celebrations in 2009, the Charles Darwin Trust and IntoUniversity organised a day out for year 6 (ages 10-11) children from St Mary's School, an inner-city London school. The learning environment for the day could not have been more appropriate: it was at Down House in Kent where Charles Darwin lived from 1842 to 1882. The children visited his house, his garden, and the famous Sandwalk where he took regular walks to aid his thinking. This article relates how a teacher can promote children's observational skills and scientific thinking in any learning environment he or she chooses to visit. By using their experiences, the authors illustrate how they encouraged children to engage with what they were seeing and helped them to focus better so they might remember what they saw, heard, or thought on their day out.
