AbstractThis article presents a creative rights pyramid that was developed as part of the author's efforts to: (1) teach about copyright and intellectual property; and (2) increase students' awareness of their own intellectual property in and outside the music classroom. The pyramid is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's food pyramid to suggest that the curricular diet in the music classroom can promote innovation and creativity in much the same way as health can be promoted via the diet advocated by the food pyramid. A premise inherent in the pyramid is that students should have considerable material that has no restrictions, allowing works that can be remixed, reused, recorded, even wrecked, and then shared with the world without having to pursue permission. This acknowledges that today's classroom exists beyond the physical school via the Internet, and recognizes that most students already post creative content on the Internet. This premise aligns closely with recent work on ubiquitous learning and a recognition that people are living in an era of lifelong learning. (Contains 1 figure, 2 notes, and 10 resources.) (ERIC).
