Abstract | In the quest for more effective education, how can direct personal engagement with actual aesthetic experiences--attendance of performances, participation in artistic workshops and activities, and viewing of actual artworks--play an important role? Art educators have a tremendous opportunity to guide students to engage mind, body, and soul--until they virtually vibrate--with the plethora of artistic opportunities around them. They can lead students to enliven their emotions and senses with the dazzling events, artworks, individuals, and interactive experiences proliferating the art arena. The author builds on J. Dewey's call for creating meaningful personal experiences as the key to a balanced education--in which aesthetics (rich sensory learning experiences) develop qualities such as empathy and provide balance to mere cognitive academic knowledge.
