AbstractLearning to learn is important and increasingly vital for people trying to deal with a rapidly changing world! Or, in the words of the European Union, learning to learn is one of the eight "key competences that citizens require for their personal fulfilment, social inclusion, active citizenship and employability in our knowledge-based society." UNIQUE, a European network of educational practitioners and researchers, decided to explore this particular key-competence learning to learn. The network therefore designed an action-research project with the main aim to understand better how education can support adult learners developing this key competence. In particular the project sets out to identify educational approaches, methods and concepts which support the development of the competence learning to learn. The project started off in November 2008 with a literature review on learning to learn in seven European countries. The review clearly showed how the term is understood very differently across Europe--from measures to become more efficient in learning all the way through to an all-encompassing competence for life. Starting from this review UNIQUE developed a core understanding of learning to learn as well as the main assumptions for the research phase. From September 2009 to March 2010 these assumptions will be tested in altogether 27 very different adult education activities across Europe--they vary in duration, theme, objectives and specific target group. But all attempt to integrate an approach to develop the learning to learn competence into their educational activities. The following article is based on the many discussions and reflections up to now throughout this project and intends to share UNIQUE's understanding and insights into the concept of learning to learn--the main assumptions and considerations when it comes to develop this key-competence. (Contains 6 notes.) (As Provided).
