AbstractThe role of institutions such as zoos in global conservation efforts is critical. In addition to serving as informal learning centers for the general public, these institutions are well-positioned to provide training and professional development for the next generation of conservation scientists. And while many organizations traditionally have focused on supporting emergent scientists based in the United States, it has become clear that we can have the greatest impact through "in-situ" training and infrastructure development within the "range country," areas of the world where the animal is being studied. For cultural, fiscal, and philosophical reasons, advancing conservation efforts in the 21st century will require a collective effort, across countries and across cultures, to achieve success. Lincoln Park Zoo embraced this challenge with a pilot program titled "Wildlife without Borders," which brought Tanzanian scientists to the United States for specialized training to better prepare them to return as conservation leaders in their respective research centers.
