| Abstract | This article looks at the Coalition Government's recent White Paper and Education Bill whose chief effect will be to further destabilise the schools system in the United Kingdom. The new Bill stipulates that if a new school is needed in an area, proposals for an Academy or a Free School must be prioritised before any other bid can be considered. The Bill facilitates large transfers of land to the new schools, a process over which there will be no local control. The 2010 White Paper announced that the Government would "create a new network of Teaching Schools, on the model of Teaching Hospitals", thereby "giving outstanding schools the role of leading the training and professional development of teachers and headteachers". (ERIC). |
